AI detection is the attempt to estimate whether text or other work may have been created or substantially changed by an AI system.
Why it matters to educators
Detection tools can appear decisive, but they are estimates with meaningful false positives and false negatives. Educators should not treat a score as proof of misconduct.
The foundation
Most detectors look for patterns that are statistically associated with AI-generated text. Human writing can share those patterns, especially for multilingual writers, formulaic assignments, or polished revisions, while AI output can be changed to avoid detection.
Detection may be one prompt for a conversation, not a final judgment. Better evidence comes from the learning process: drafts, notes, version history, explanations, and an assessment design that lets students demonstrate understanding.
