AI literacy is the ability to understand, question, and use AI tools thoughtfully, safely, and for an appropriate purpose.
Why it matters to educators
Educators need more than a list of tools. AI literacy helps them decide when a tool is useful, what it can and cannot reliably do, and how students can use it with judgment.
The foundation
AI literacy combines practical skill with critical thinking. It includes understanding prompts, models, data, bias, privacy, source checking, and the human responsibility that remains after a tool produces an answer.
It is not the same as being an AI expert or using every new platform. An AI-literate educator can ask useful questions, set sensible boundaries, and help learners explain their own reasoning and choices.
What this can look like in education
Evaluate a lesson-planning tool
A teacher tests a tool against a real planning task, checks the factual claims and accessibility of its output, and decides whether its time savings justify using it.
Teach students to question a result
Students compare an AI summary with a source text and identify what the tool omitted, overstated, or left uncertain.
