Computer vision is AI that identifies patterns, objects, text, or other information in images and video.
Why it matters to educators
Computer vision appears in document scanning, accessibility tools, image search, and some monitoring products. It can be helpful, but visual interpretation errors and privacy risks deserve special care in education.
The foundation
A computer-vision system processes pixels and patterns to label, describe, or compare images. It does not see with human understanding, and it can misread context, identity, emotion, handwriting, or culturally specific visual cues.
Accuracy can vary widely across environments and people. Avoid relying on vision AI alone for discipline, safety, grading, or judgments about students, and confirm that any image or video use meets school privacy requirements.
