Generative AI is a category of artificial intelligence that creates new content—such as text, images, audio, video, or code—from patterns learned during training.
Why it matters to educators
Education professionals encounter generative AI in lesson planning, student work, communication, research, and administrative tools. Understanding what it does helps educators choose appropriate uses, set expectations, and recognize when human review is essential.
The foundation
Generative AI produces a new response based on the prompt, available context, and patterns in its training. It does not retrieve a guaranteed correct answer from a complete reference book, and it does not understand a classroom or student in the human sense.
Its educational value is strongest when it accelerates drafting, variation, organization, or exploration while an educator supplies the purpose and checks the result. Privacy, accuracy, bias, copyright, and accessibility still require deliberate judgment.
