Nobody builds a great CTE learning experience and then thinks, "I can't wait to document which standards it hits."
But that documentation is not optional. Your district wants it. The state wants it. If Perkins money is involved, the federal government wants it. So you sit down with your standards document open in one window and your lesson plan in the other, and you spend an afternoon crosswalking.
The work itself is not hard. It's just slow, repetitive, and easy to do sloppily when you're tired.
Here's a setup that does the first pass for you. You build it once as a ChatGPT Project or a Google Gemini Gem, then paste in a learning experience and get back a full alignment report: which standards are met, which are partially met, which are missed, and what you'd need to add to close each gap.
What You Get Back
The output is built to hand to an administrator, not to decipher yourself. It includes:
A summary of the learning experience with grade level, duration, and objectives.
An alignment matrix sorting every standard into met, partially met, or not met.
Evidence for each call, so the report shows its work instead of just asserting a match.
Gap analysis and recommended actions for anything that falls short.

The gap analysis is the part most people underuse. It doesn't just tell you that you missed a standard. It tells you what to add to hit it, which often turns out to be a small tweak rather than a new lesson.
The Part That Makes It Work
This is the step people skip, and it's the whole ballgame.
You have to upload your actual standards documents to the AI as knowledge files. Your state's CTE standards. Your program area frameworks. Your district's requirements. Whatever you're being held to.
Without those files, the AI is working from memory, and its memory of your state's standards codes is not something you want attached to a grant report. With those files loaded, it's reading the real document and quoting it back to you.
You have two good places to build this. A ChatGPT Project is a folder that holds a set of instructions plus your uploaded files, and every chat you start inside it inherits both. A Gemini Gem works the same way: one set of instructions, with your standards attached as knowledge.
Either one works. The Project has one advantage worth mentioning for this particular job. Each alignment run stays saved as its own chat inside the folder, so you end up with a running record of what you documented and when. That's handy when someone asks about a lesson you aligned four months ago.
How to Set It Up
Gather your standards documents as PDFs. State CTE standards, program frameworks, anything you report against.
Create the container. In ChatGPT, start a new Project. In Gemini, create a new Gem.
Paste the instructions at the bottom of this post into the instructions field.
Upload your standards PDFs as files in that Project or Gem.
Test it on a learning experience you've already aligned by hand. Compare the results. This is how you find out whether your documents are being read correctly before you trust it on new work.
That last step matters. Spend twenty minutes on it.
Verify Before You Submit
Two honest cautions.
Check every standard code against the source. AI tools are good at producing text that looks exactly like a standards citation. Loading your knowledge files makes this far more reliable, and the instructions below tell it to refuse to cite anything it can't locate, but you are still the one signing the compliance document. Spot-check the codes.
Treat the confidence ratings and alignment percentage as rough. They're the model's own estimate of its own work, not a measurement. Useful for sorting what to look at first. Not a number to defend in a grant audit.
Think of this as a strong first draft that saves you the tedious part, with your judgment still applied at the end.

Set up properly, this takes an afternoon of alignment work down to a few minutes of review. And because your standards live in the knowledge files, you build it once and use it for every learning experience for the rest of the year.
