Foundational AI term

Responsible AI

Also used: Trustworthy AI

Responsible AI is the practice of designing and using AI in ways that are safe, fair, transparent, accountable, and appropriate for people affected by it.

Why it matters to educators

Schools serve real people with different rights, needs, and levels of power. Responsible AI gives educators a practical way to weigh benefits against privacy, bias, accessibility, accuracy, and human oversight.

The foundation

Responsible AI is not a single setting or checklist. It is an ongoing practice: clarify the purpose, examine data and risks, involve the people affected, set limits, monitor outcomes, and keep a person accountable for important decisions.

A tool can be useful in one context and inappropriate in another. The key question is not only whether AI can perform a task, but whether using it supports the educational purpose without creating unacceptable harm or inequity.

What this can look like in education

Review a new AI tool

A school team checks student-data practices, age requirements, accessibility, bias risks, and the human review process before piloting a tool.

Set classroom boundaries

A teacher explains which AI uses are allowed for an assignment, what must be disclosed, and how students will demonstrate their own learning.
