AI prompts

Also used: Prompt

A prompt is the information and direction you give an AI system to shape what it produces.

Why it matters to educators

Educators often use the same AI tool and get very different results. A clear prompt makes the instructional goal, audience, constraints, and desired output visible, which makes useful results more likely and easier to evaluate.

The foundation

A prompt can be a question, an instruction, an example, a document, an image, or a combination of these. In education, a useful prompt usually identifies the task, supplies relevant context, describes the learners or setting, and sets boundaries for the response.

Prompts do not guarantee accurate or appropriate output. They give the model better direction, while the educator remains responsible for checking facts, protecting student information, and deciding whether the result fits the learning purpose.

What this can look like in education

Adapt a lesson without lowering the goal

A teacher provides a learning objective, the current activity, and a description of the support students need, then asks for three accessible versions that preserve the same academic target.

Draft family communication

A school leader specifies the audience, purpose, reading level, required details, and tone before requesting a concise family update—without including private student information.
